Shakespeare in Geneva

The Bodmer Foundation in Cologny, Geneva, counts among its vast library of world literature a collection of 174 early modern English books dating from between the late fifteenth and the end of the seventeenth century. Particularly remarkable in the collection is the greatest set of early Shakespeare editions outside the English-speaking world, which have recently been digitised by the Bodmer Lab and made freely available online.

Shakespeare in Geneva: Early Modern English Books (1475-1700) at the Martin Bodmer Foundation (2018) is a companion volume to this newly digitised collection, introducing and presenting bibliographical information about these 174 titles. The book’s introduction foregrounds the history of Martin Bodmer’s library while its catalogue pays close attention to all English books in the collection by supplying a complete bibliographical profile, including physical descriptions, provenance, and annotations for each copy.
